Designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), an ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit is the industry standard for a basic, walk-through energy audit that details energy-use within various systems, as well as overall energy consumption patterns.

Consequentially, it has been adopted by LEED in many rating systems and is a prerequisite for LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance. A typical ASHRAE Level 1 will require at least 12 months of energy bills to understand and report the major uses (loads) of your building, and estimate how much energy each load is using. When complete, an ASHRAE Level 1 provides an overview as to what amount of energy various parts of the building are using. It also details “no” and “low-cost” measures which can be undertaken on the building to reduce energy needs.

The best reason to use this solution is if you are pursuing LEED Certification. As a prerequisite credit, it is required for existing buildings.

If you are not required to have an ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit done on your facility, we would recommend a Custom Energy Audit because it offers a more tailored energy audit of your facility. For instance, if a chiller upgrade would produce the quickest payback period and highest rate of return on a building if upgraded, an ASHRAE Level 1 would not include this analysis because it is not a no or low-cost item. However, we believe this information is useful for the building owner to know, in order to make appropriate capital budgeting and other capital expenditure decisions on the facility.

We will need to conduct a brief interview with your building operator, perform a walk-through of your facility, and have at least 12 months of utility bill data. For most buildings, we can turn around an ASHRAE Level 1 within one week.
